Dave, Joe, Pete, and I gathered at the last German Park picnic of the year to play Catan. We met at Pete's and then Joe transported us to the park.
We got in at 3:30. Dave and I brought the game gear in to the fenced and barb-wired enclosure--after I assured the security guard I only had "nerd stuff" in the bag and not banned food or drinks--to a table away from band area. Pete and Joe meanwhile purchased tickets. We had until 4:00 to set up the first game until Dave and I went to get the first two buckets of beer.
PRO TIP: You can get in the shorter line that advertises cheap domestic beer and order the better stuff. Clearly a lot of people didn't know that.
It took a long time before the food lines got down to a level that we thought we could endure. After only a small breakfast early in the day, eating 12 hours later enhanced the beer's effects. Although kudos to Joe for grabbing soft pretzels and a large spooge of mustard on a napkin to keep us from lapsing into comas.
We decided to play for fun only with no statistics or game log information. We did play, as this clearly shows:
The wind occasionally carried off cards. We used extra dice (I brought the dice chest) to weigh them down but as we played they fell off until another wind gust reminded us to put them back on.
I must say, it was easier to shrug off forgetting to pick up resources on numbers you overlooked you had.
We played three games before it got dark. Each game was won by a different player. I'm just going to say that at one point in the second game Joe was simply giving his entire resource hand to Pete for seemingly random single cards.
Anyway, we made it through the entire event without mentioning the war. So we're all good.
We gave away our remaining beer and headed out well before 10:00 after packing up the game. I'll have to check it before the next game night.
And remember that the next game night will be on September 30th at the western outpost of DaveHaus in Dexter. We shall play Seafarers of Catan and/or vanilla Catan depending on how many people show for the pizza oven extravaganza that Dave is planning. More to follow of course.
But just because the game night was unofficial to focus on the beer and impressing the chicks with our fully displayed nerdiness doesn't mean there will be no meme!
Much fun. Thanks to Pete for the suggestion to go to German Park for game night. It turned out to be a great day for it.
