Gentlemen,
Game night with Catan was last night.
We
started with 6--Paul (and his son Frank) for the first game and then
Pete, Tony, Joe, and I finished up with two more games on the small
board. We're still like a well-oiled pit crew on that operation.
Game
start at 8:00 and we wrapped up playing after midnight and had a ritual
watching of Game of Thrones season 3 ep. 3 and coffee for those who
wanted it. Yes, there was a brothel scene. (on game of thrones, I hasten
to add)
We
dined on deep dish cottage inn pizza with FLAVORED crust (to keep Joe
from down-voting me on Yelp again), plus potato chips and several dips,
cookies (including some ginger cookies baked by my daughter on Friday!)
and peanut M & Ms.
Of
note, the bacon pizza was WAY more popular than the pepperoni pizza. I
thought it was just me. (no, my eyes aren't a little moist at all! I
think my contact lens is bothering me ... )
We
had the usual beer supply (Labatt is an official sponsor of Nerd Night
at Beej's--expect a new case promotion when the futility of highlighting
the Red Wings this year becomes too obvious to ignore) plus a plethora
of guest beers including corona, guinness, strohs, and bass (thanks
guys--but I keep telling you, really, just show up! )
Also, Tony's wife sent jello shots. Nobody else's wife ever sent jello shots (sorry, I think I got something in my eye again ... )
The
games were brutal in key resource shortages in each one. Good lord. I
will take the rap for setting up the first game but the next two weren't
on me.
The first two games I didn't even manage to build a city!
And I'm not sure I was alone in that distinction, truth be told. Not
that I'm blaming the jello shots, or anything. The first game I
inadvertently bet it all on 5, 10, and something else that didn't come
up much that game. My bad.
Anyway, that thread of shortage made each game longer than usual.
Even the tiny dice let me down.
Tony
cutting me off with road building had an effect on buildable terrain
for me in one game while the other original site was surrounded and
useless. And he did make a futile attempt to take the longest road from
me in another game that ran out of right-of-way as I counter-built. Of
course, my effort was futile victory-wise ...
And
as if we all don't already know in great and glorious detail this sad
story, Joe took the opportunity of that epic great road race to remind
us of how he found out that a longest road can be broken by someone else
building a settlement along the path if it isn't protected from such
building (really, who needs to be told THAT? Who's with me?). But
perhaps it was the jello shots talking.
I
did get a fair amount of sheep with a monopoly card. Otherwise, nobody
really got hosed in a notable manner. Or nobody complained too loudly.
Given those options, I favor the former explanation.
The robber was out in usual force but nothing shocking to the senses, I think.
The largest army was indeed played once for a victory (by Pete). That was the one game I thought I had a shot at winning.
Indeed, Pete swept the night winning all three games, may he rot in--I mean, congratulations Pete! Well played!
In a horrifying development, Joe went there. In an amazing display of "What? That's nerdy?" he quoted Star Wars. Star Wars,
people. Like we don't have a reputation problem already. You wonder why
the only girls here on nerd night are on the game of thrones viewing?
Let
me bounce the rubble and let you know that Star Trek Continues has a
new episode out on April 1st, I believe; with 3 more in post-production
to wrap up their fan show that really carries on the tradition of the
original series. Joe, it goes without saying, heartily endorses it
(sorry Joe, I'm single--I had to throw you under the nerd bus).
Also
note that Frank displays a ruthlessness that reflects well on his
father (and darn the flying debris in the air, anyway ... ) For a while
there, I thought Frank was going to have to beg a ride from a non-parent
or perhaps Uber his way home.
And
despite the wide variety of drinking options, nobody opted to spend the
night here after sobering up. Or I just haven't found them yet. It is
always an option, gentlemen.
Anyway,
thanks to those who made it. I always look forward to nerd night. I
hope you guys do too. I'll have to think of the April schedule soon!
And
if I've left out your proudest moment of screwing someone over or a
plan that ALMOST gave you non-Pete glory and conquest, please fill us
in!
